Srinagar: Family of 21-year-old woman who breathed her last on November 27 after being allegedly abducted and raped by two men in an orchard in Ashmuji village of Kulgam, demanded timely and stringent punishment to the accused.

The woman fought grave injuries at the hospital for over a month, but could not make it. The Doctors say she was very badly injured.

Medical Superintendent SKIMS, Farooq Jan told Free Press Kashmir that the woman was brought to the hospital in a critical condition.

“She was hit on her head due to which she had suffered traumatic brain injury. She had strangulation marks on her neck. The autopsy report will confirm her actual cause of death. The report may be lying with the police,” he said.

Station House Officer (SHO) Devsar, Jazib Mohammad did not reveal the charge sheet and cause of death to this reporter. However, he said the two accused in the case are in their custody since the incident happened, and will be presented in the court soon.

“Although the accused have accepted their crime in front of police, they have to accept it in front of the court,” he added.

The police has identified the accused as Aadil Ahmad Dar and Waseem Rehman Dar, both residents of Ashmuji Kulgam from Akhal.

In October the deceased woman, a resident of Poniwah village of Kulgam was attending a marriage ceremony of her cousin sister in Akhal hamlet.

On October 31, at around 10 in the morning the victim left to collect the wedding dress of her cousin, as per the family.

“On her way she was abducted by two men and taken to an orchard in Ashmuji village around 5 kilometres away, where she was assaulted and then raped,” said her mourning mother.

“They did not just rape her, she was also tortured and the torture marks were visible on her body. The skin around her eyes was cut down. Her eyes were bruised and bulged out. Blood was oozing from her eyes. She had ligature marks around her neck which means that they had tried to choke her breath. Her tongue was cut down. She was hit on her head. Her body was tortured black and blue,” recalled the victim’s aunt.

The woman was found in a semi unconscious condition by the villagers in the afternoon.

She was first taken to the district hospital by the locals who saw her lying lifeless in the orchard. She was then referred to the SKIMS Srinagar and was in coma for around a month. On November 27 she breathed her last.

Earlier, police had said that regarding the incident, a case vide FIR number 116/2020 U/S 341, 366, 376/511, 354, 323 had been registered in Police Station Devsar.

The family is in utter shock and demanded ‘timely and severe punishment’ to the culprits.

“We don’t know why the entire valley is silent over this issue. If today it was my sister tomorrow it can be anyone’s mother, daughter, sister or wife. A month has passed when this incident happened but the culprits are still enjoying a good meal inside the jail. Why is the government not punishing them? There shouldn’t have been any delay. They should be hanged in the middle of city so that no one will dare to do such things,” said the elder sister of the victim.

She said that many officials visited their house but the demand that the culprits should be hanged.

“We don’t need anything from the government. We just demand the accused should be hanged till death. This is the only punishment they should be given. We would not accept anything less in this matter,” added the sister.
