Srinagar: Srinagar tops from bottom in Urban Ministry’s “Ease of Living Index”. Ease of living index is a tool used to assess the quality of life, economic ability, sustainability and resilience of a city.

Out of 49 cities ranked in the million plus category of the liveability index, Srinagar ranks last in the list with a score of 42.9 while Jammu secured 27th spot in the list with a score of 52.49.

In the million plus category, Bengaluru, Pune and Ahmedabad emerged as most liveable cities of India with Bengaluru at top. While Shimla topped the list in less than a million category.

Performance of the cities was measured on the basis of four major parameters vis-à-vis governance, social, physical and economic infrastructure.

The ease of living index was released by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on Thursday. Irrespective of being categorized on the basis of population Srinagar still scored less than the other 110 participating cities overall.

Former Finance Minister of J&K, Haseeb Drabu took to micro blogging site twitter and wrote, “based on quality of life, economic ability, sustainability & citizens perception, Union Housing & Urban Affairs Ministry ranks Srinagar the most unlivable city in India. May be policy makers should try to make it livable for residents prior to making it attractive to investors.”
